Ciao is an abbreviation of the Venetian s’ciàvo vostro (I am your slave) . But why?
Basically, every time you say ciao you are proclaiming that you are someones slave. Where could this possibly come from?
Well, there was a period when Roman law dictated that individuals upon meeting announce their social rank. Obviously, the lesser man was the one to first do so. He would say it in this exaggerated way, "I am your slave." This would by tradition end up in Italian vernacular
