The best employee retention tactic that doesn't get enough attention:
New Hire Preboarding.
Here's what is and how to do it:
Preboarding is the period of time between an employee accepting their job offer and their first day.
- It fosters loyalty
- It prevents turnover
- It ensures your new employee shows up on day 1 ready to be productive
It's even more important in the new virtual/hybrid world.
2 important stats:
- 22% of new hires ghost their employers (don't show up after accepting an offer)
- Only 29% of the workforce is reportedly engaged
Employee engagement strategies must start early.
Even if a candidate had a ton of enthusiasm around the role during their interviews, if you let weeks go by without contact, that spark will likely burn out.
Preboarding offers you a chance to start aligning new hires with your mission, vision, and culture.
Here's how to do it:
Understand their motivation
Ask the questions to identify what really motivates this person, what will keep them at your organization, and really get to know them.
This will become your golden source for their engagement throughout their tenure.
Video from a senior leader
Have a senior leader in the organization send a quick 30-60 video welcoming the new team member.
Use this opportunity to show your excitement and share the company's mission, vision, and values.
Connection with team members
Put a plan in place for the new team members to reach out and form a connection.
The studies show that people with friends at their organization tend to stay.
Creating that bond early will help to form those relationships.
Consistent communication from the manager
We all know people leave managers, not companies.
This is the new manager's opportunity to be able to provide a strong first impression.
This first impression matters so much.
Provide the manager with what they need to reach out.
Ensure IT is on time
Nothing creates a bad first impression like not having your laptop delivered on time.
Put a plan in place that holds IT accountable for ensuring the equipment is sent out early enough and they are available to provide support on day 1.
TL;DR:
5 steps to effectively preboard a new employee:
1. Understand their motivation
2. Video from a senior leader
3. Connection with team members
4. Consistent communication from the manager
5. Ensure IT is on time
What else would you add?
Preboarding and onboarding are two areas I am passionate about.
I get the opportunity to help take this off the plate of organizations to ensure a smooth first impression for their new employees with activateonboarding.com
