Everything I wish I knew about quitting porn when I was addicted:
1. Quitting porn isn't a struggle.
"Just stop watching it bro"
That's not what I'm saying.
(P.S. if that advice worked there'd be no porn addicts.)
Once you stop viewing it as a struggle it becomes easier.
You have the power you need to break free already.
You just have to take responsibility.
2. Figure out why you watch it
You watch porn for 2 reasons:
- You watch porn because it makes you feel good when you feel bad
- You watch porn not because you're horny but because you're hurting
Everyone's why is a mixture of those 2 things.
Don't waste time finding yours.
3. You don't watch it because you're horny.
Watching porn has nothing to do with wanting to have sex.
If you actually wanted to have sex you'd go have sex.
"But I have urges"
Those are urges to release stress. Not sexual urges.
4. You watch porn because you're hurting.
Porn is a way for you to cope with stress.
Stress is both:
- An emotional tension in the body
- A physical tension on the body
If you want to quit porn you have to find healthier ways to release tension.
5. Triggers aren't what they seem.
Everyone thinks their triggers are hot girls on social media.
But they aren't.
The real triggers are stressful situations, fights with your spouse, canceled plans, etc
You have to look beyond the photo and feel the emotion behind it.
6. Site-blockers make quitting harder.
I knew a guy who quit for 6-months.
Then he found an old phone without site-blockers on it.
And he's been addicted to porn since.
Site-blockers take away your ability to say no to porn.
Stop using them.
7. You don't have to have more sex to quit porn.
I quit porn when I was single and 20.
You don't watch it because you're horny anyway.
More sex isn't the cure.
8. You need a healthy way to release stress.
Some of the best stress relievers for men are:
- Lifting weights
- Nature walks
- Eating steaks
- Smoking cigars
- Hanging with homies
- Journaling
- Sun maxxing
- Reading your bible
- Praying
Any of those is better than porn.
9. Start journaling
Start a routine of journaling.
- Spend 20 minutes journaling in the morning
- Spend 20 minutes journaling in the evening
Focus on answering these two questions:
"What am I feeling? What am I thinking?"
Then create solutions to your problems.
10. Find an accountability partner
You need someone who will show you support and give you guidance.
Someone who will check in with you throughout the day.
Someone who will ask you:
(P.S. I am that someone)
