If you’re a startup, hire marketers who are fire-starters
(Not flame-feeders)
What’s the difference?
I'll tell you...
Fire-starters know how to create something from nothing
They’ll roll up their sleeves and get shit done
They can do a lot with very little
Fire-starters can deal with uncertainty
They'll work fast to create the first few sparks (aka early growth)
But you should expect that it will take time—and often many false starts—to get the fire burning
Flame-feeders know how to pour gas on the fire to drive faster growth
They understand scale
They’ve worked at big companies
They're used to big budgets and big expectations
Flame-feeders typically fall into 2 categories:
1. Specialists with deep knowledge in 1 or 2 areas
2. Strategists who delegate to specialists (rather than do the work themselves)
If you've got a small fire burning, flame-feeders can really blow shit up
Both types of marketers are valuable
But if you’re a startup looking to make your first marketing hire…
You need a fire-starter...
Fire-starters are rare
If you're lucky enough to find one... treat them like gold
(And if you can’t find one, you’ll need to become one)
