Want income over the bear market?
1 year ago I had:
• No twitter
• No followers
• No writing income
Now:
• Writing income *more than* supports me
I spent 10+ months & thousands of dollars learning how to write content.
Here's the best of what I learned, for free.
👇
🧵
The two questions I get the most in my inbox:
➔ "Can you write something for me?"
from projects
➔ "How do I get paid to write in Web3?" from other DeFi writers
If there is demand for crypto writing and a supply of crypto writers...
Why isn't everyone getting paid to write?
As writers, here's why:
• You don't know the kind of writer you are
• You don't know how to write thread hooks
• Your topics don't match your size
• Your engagement tactics are hurting you
• You're doing the wrong work reputationally
This thread will address these for you.
🎯 What kind of writer are you?
All crypto writers fall into 2 categories:
✍️ EXPLAINERS
• Easily understood by everyone despite no peak DeFi knowledge
• Explains DeFi using stories, humor, analogies
• Appeals to beginner DeFi users
• People see them as "good writers"
📝 TECHNICIANS
• Explains DeFi using math and data
• Peak DeFi / macro knowledge
• Will explain Liquidity Pools starting with x*y=k
• Appeals to advanced DeFi users
• People see them as "thought leaders" or "gigabrains"
🎯 Which style should you optimize for?
• Explainers get more writing offers
• Technicians get more consulting offers
If you want to get paid to write, write like an explainer.
Why?
Most crypto projects are already run by technicians.
They need their message simplified.
The rules of Twitter are:
⮕ Threads grow your audience
⮕ Daily Tweets grow your engagement
When thinking about threads, you should put over 50% of your focus into the hook (1st Tweet).
🎯 4 Hook Structures I *always* use from @Nicolascole77
- Here's a ton of value for minimal time
- Here's a ton of value for minimal cost
- Here's how to solve your problem without much effort
- Here's how to unlock this desirable outcome, instantly
Examples
👇
✅ 1) Here's a ton of value for minimal time:
"It took me 8 months and $50,000 worth of losses to learn this.
Here are 10 DeFi tips that will save you months of learning.
👇
A thread🧵"
✅ 2) Here's a ton of value for minimal cost:
"I paid over $15,000 in crypto mentorships.
Here are the 10 most useful things I learned.
They're yours for free.
(+ examples)
A thread🧵"
✅ 3) ‍Here's how to solve your problem without much effort:
"Constantly getting liquidated despite having alpha?
Here are 3 on-chain metrics that stop that from happening 📈
Be the hammer, not the nail
(in 5 mins of reading or less)
(a thread)🧵"
✅ 4‍. Here's how to unlock this desirable outcome, instantly:
"Everything you need to do to position yourself for the ETH Merge in 5 mins or less"
👇
🧵"
Counter-Examples:
⭕ Bad Hooks:
“Why the ETH Merge is bullish”
“Why FRAX is the best stablecoin”
Thread hooks aren't romantic.
You don't subtly tease the benefits to the reader - you straight up tell them:
"Read this - and you get this outcome"
Cheat Code: Use @typefully templates.
Here's an example of one of mine:
🎯 What do you write about?
The smaller your account is, the more specific you have to be.
Decide how much to niche down based on your follower count:
< 500 - wine from a village in france
< 1k - wine from a region in france
< 5k - wine in france
< 10k - wine
> 20k - anything
For crypto (based on your follower count)
< 500 ➔ small caps/ projects/ small
< 1k ➔ niches (nodes, perps, rebase DAOs)
< 5k ➔ large caps/ big niches
(GameFi, DEXs, L1s)
< 10k ➔ DeFi / NFTs / catalysts
20k ➔ anything
I learned this from @aaditsh and @brandonthezhang and was the one thing that got me to my first 1,000 followers.
I used to write about creativity, NFTs, how blockchains work, but I didn't get any traction until I started specing down.
Start hyper-specific.
🎯 Not all followers are equal
Twitter rewards you with the same type of engagement that you used to grow your account.
I have frens with 30k+ followers that get low engagement for "smart tweets" bcos they grew their accounts using giveaways.
Consider "how" you grow your acct.
🎯 Automate Daily Tweets
If threads are the best way to grow your account, tweeting daily is the best way to grow your engagement.
You don't have to "tweet everyday" to tweet everyday.
I batch my tweets ahead of time with @TweetHunterIO.
A few focused sessions a week will do.
🎯 Technical Writer vs Ghostwriter vs Influencer
• An influencer gets paid to thread about projects
• A technical writer writes medium articles and Whitepapers on a freelance basis
• A Ghostwriter takes care of all the written content (tweets, threads, medium articles)
⭕ Problem:
Writing as an influencer carries reputational risk.
Threading about a project on your personal account is viewed as an endorsement of that project, especially if it is paid.
If the project tanks, CT views you as a shiller (even if it's obvs not your fault) 📉
Always choose to be a technical writer or ghostwriter over writing as an influencer.
Technical writing and ghostwriting do not carry reputational risk.
Ghostwriting is the best option as you are retained on a monthly basis.
If you've read this far, you should know:
• Which style of writing to adopt
• 4 usable thread hook templates
• How to niche content up and down depending on your follower count
• Engagement tactics to avoid
• Pros and cons: Technical Writer, Ghostwriter, Influencer
To wrap up:
This thread revolves around maximizing your Twitter to get inbound leads
(projects messaging you).
An equally viable strategy by @wallenby1 is to start on Upwork and create a portfolio to use for outbound leads
(you messaging projects).
This thread is part of a larger article I wrote for @thirdwork
In that article, I also discuss:
• Pricing
• Tips for speedrunning Medium Articles
They reached out to me, but you can reach out to them to get your start.

A little different from what I usually thread about, but if you enjoyed it and learned something you can use...
