Remembering Durgawati Vohra or “Durga Bhabhi”, also known as the 'The Agni of India', on her Birth Anniversary (7 Oct 1907)
The Unsung Woman who was an expert in BOMB MAKING and a terror for the British, helped Bhagat Singh escape from Lahore to Calcutta after killing Saunders.
At the age of 19, Durgawati was secretly making bombs and acting as a spy.
Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev went to her house after killing British police officer John Saunders. Durga resented that the real culprit J. A. Scot escaped. She gave Bhagat Singh the idea of going to Calcutta
To dupe over 500 policemen travelling in the same train, Bhagat Singh and Durga acted as a couple and Rajguru as their servant.
When Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru were awarded the death sentence, Durga did everything to prevent it. To rescue them, Durga sold her ornaments
To save their lives, she even pleaded with Gandhi, but all in vain.
As revenge for the hanging of Bhagat Singh , Durga decided to kill Lord Hailey, ex-Governor of Punjab who was an enemy of freedom movement.
Although the Governor escaped, his aides were injured.
Durga was arrested and awarded 3 years imprisonment.
After Independence, she lived the life of a religious Gujarati Hindu Brahmin woman away from any limelight.
She never craved for any recognition or political power. She donated all her money and land to Shaheed Sodh Sansthan
and passed away at the age of 92 (1907-– 1999)
While many British loyalists of yesteryear are now portrayed as great freedom fighters, Many freedom fighters like Durgawati have not received their due credit.
And they were forgotten after Independence
