Stop writing into the void.
Start creating content your customers *actually* care about:
Use *The Heroic Customer Story* framework👇
It all starts with *THE HERO*
Your customer.
- Who are they? (Pro tip: Use real life examples if possible.)
- What is their role and job title?
- What is their status quo like?
The more descriptive you can be, the more your stories will resonate.
Your Hero has *ASPIRATIONS*
- What do they want?
- What do they NEED? (Very different)
- WHO do they aspire to be?
Hint: Your hero doesn't want better business software that reduces costs by 30%. Dig deeper.
But they also face *CHALLENGES*
🏔️ What mountains (systemic obstacles) stand in their way?
👿 What villains hold them back?
In other words, why hasn't your Hero taken action on their aspirations yet?
Eventually, every Hero receives a *CALL TO ACTION*
- What big change is happening in your Hero's world?
- What is the EXACT trigger that propels them to start chasing their goals?
(Pro tip: For more on buying triggers, follow @katebour's work)
But the Hero can't succeed alone.
They need a *GUIDE*
That's you.
- Who are you?
- What's your mission?
- What's your experience/expertise?
- Why should the Hero trust you?
You share the *VISION*
- What will life look like for the hero if they succeed?
- What rewards and benefits await them at the end of their journey?
Your hero needs to know the journey will be worth it.
You give them a *PLAN*
As the guide, you must equip your Hero with the training, tools, and support to succeed.
- What are the exact steps the hero should take to succeed?
- What resources will they need along the way?
The Hero sets off on *THE JOURNEY*
It will not always be smooth.
- What obstacles will the Hero face? (Hint: Not all obstacles are external)
- What milestones (i.e. small wins) should they look for?
- Where have other heroes failed in the past?
The Hero eventually achieves *VICTORY*
They did it! Thanks in small part to your help.
- How will the Hero know when they've succeeded?
- What will success look, feel, and smell like?
Be as vivid as possible.
But the Hero didn't just succeed...
They *TRANSFORMED*
- Who has the Hero become on their journey?
- How will their life be different now?
- What is the Hero's next adventure?
How to use the Heroic Customer Framework:
1. Answer each question in the infographic above.
2. Talk directly with customers to understand their journey.
3. Create content for each stage of the journey.
Map your content strategy to the Heroic Customer Story.
The Heroic Customer Story is not a new concept.
It's inspired by The Hero's Journey, humanity's most essential myth.
I also learned from other frameworks like @donaldmiller's Storybrand and Brendan Dell's High Impact Messaging.
This is my take on a timeless approach.
So stop writing into the void.
Start creating content your customers *actually* care about.
Make them the hero of the story.
And you'll always have an audience.
If this framework is helpful for you, let me know in the comments.
Then follow me @benjaminputano for more writing and storytelling tools.
Finally, RT/QT to share it with your audience.
Peace ✌️
