Pottery as an African expression.
Within the art world, art vs craft is a huge topic. They consider pottery, basket weaving, quilting, and any usable works (coincidentally produced by women) as non (or lower level) art.
Itโ€™s important to note that those who create these works are usually non-white women.
Considering pottery non-art despite the technical skill and imagination required to make these vessels (that are not only beautiful but useful for the entire community) is another way to demean African (and non-European) art expressions.
Fun Orisa Fact: Osun, the worldโ€™s beloved orisa of beauty, art, love, fertility, and the sweetness of life was an artist who loved the soil. Her choice of artistic expression was clay and she would create fantastic pottery.
Thatโ€™s why we use clay pots for her and not wood.
