Which Barcelona players from 15/16 - 20/21 had the best and worst Added Receiving Rates (ARR)?
It's no surprise that a Messi season takes the top spot in this time frame. His 19/20 passes gave teammates a 0.85% better chance to receive than his teammates
So what's surprising?..
Here are all of Messi'a ARRs for these 6 seasons. All 6 of these fall within the top 12 of all player-seasons in this time frame (there were 127 total player-seasons).
He always gave his teammates at least a 0.53% better chance of receiving his passes than an average teammate.
What's possibly interesting is comparing these Barcelona figures to the Indian Super League of 21/22 and Women's Super League between 18/19 and 20/21.
For example, Messi's best season wouldn't crack the top 10 in the 21/22 ISL.
This of course does not mean that Provat Lakra is a better pure passer than Messi, for example. This mainly means that Lakra's passes to his NorthEast United teammates in 21/22 were better than his team's average than Messi's passes were to Barรงa's average
And also, given what we know about Barcelona's tiki-taka passes, the average reception % (i.e. pass completion %) for all players should be higher than most other teams' avg.
That will give less opportunity for players to have >1.0 ARR, including one of the game's best passers
Overall, I think tactics play a smaller role in a player's ARR compared to the league in general.
Much like looking at a player's xG or goals scored, looks like ARR might be a great metric to compare within a league and not immune to cross-league quirks. Which is expected
With that said, I also don't have access to StatsBomb's full La Liga seasons in this time frame, only the matches Messi played in. I would love to see where Messi and Suรกrez's numbers compare to the league average each season
But, I think we do see the use of ARR again here, even if there are outstanding questions... Messi is, naturally, the best ARR passer of this 6-year span.
Average ARR of 0.667%.
Suรกrez avg ARR was 0.649%.
Iniesta had 3 seasons here by the way, avg ARR = -0.058%
Very interesting stuff. I would love for someone with greater access to StatsBomb data (or any data with the passer and receiver noted for all passes) to see what similar "quality" leagues' ARRs look like.
I'm thinking we could use this to compare similar levels of leagues
And if you haven't read it already or want a refresher, here's my article where I introduced ARR, explained it, shared code, and walked through some examples.
