Haven't done a long thread on twitter in a while because Ive been consigning my creative output to substack. Today we will discuss the Papal States connection to the Confederacy, and how Pope Pius IX may have ordered the hit on Lincoln. 🧵
“it is often forgotten that there existed a Catholic South prior to a Catholic North. Much of the South had been colonized by the French and Spanish prior to its incorporation into the United States.
Many Confederates were Catholics including Secretary of the Navy Stephen Mallory and General Pierre Beauregard who led the attack on Fort Sumter that opened the conflict.
Confederate president Jefferson Davis, though a Protestant, had been educated by Dominicans and had a lifelong sympathy for the Church.”
The early history of the United States was rife with anti papal sentiment. The founding fathers frequently warned of Jesuit agents, and due to connections with masonry (and obvious protestant affiliation) despised the Papacy. America has long beefed with the Bishop of Rome.
In the words of John Adams “I do not like the reappearance of the Jesuits.... Shall we not have regular swarms of them here, in as many disguises as only a king of the gipsies can assume, dressed as printers, publishers, writers and schoolmasters?
If ever there was a body of men who merited damnation on earth and in Hell, it is this society of Loyola’s. Nevertheless, we are compelled by our system of religious toleration to offer them an asylum."
Now let’s fast forward to Pius IX. The Papal States would finally be robbed of all their territory when the revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi would complete the Risorgimento in 1870, uniting the peninsula under the Kingdom of Italy.
One of the first nations to recognize the new “Kingdom of Italy,” was the USA. Not only that, but Abraham Lincoln offered Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi the rank of Major General in the Union Army, although he refused unless Lincoln offered command of his armies
In 1863, Jefferson Davis sent Pius IX a letter thanking him for offers of prayers of peace he had given to the Catholic population in New Orleans. When the pope wrote back, addressing him as the “Illustrious and Hon. Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America
Richmond,” It caused outrage in the North. Google searches and historians down play this fact, but the Papal States were the only Nation to truly recognize the CSA.
Now, an excerpt from a letter crafted by Jefferson Davis while imprisoned after the war.
“When our war had closed in the defeat of the South, and I was incarcerated with treatment the most needlessly rigorous, if not designedly cruel; a voice came from afar to cheer and console me in my solitary captivity.
The Holy Father sent me his likeness, and beneath it was written, by his own hand, the comforting invitation our Lord gives to all who are oppressed, in these words: ‘Venite ad me omnes qui laboratis, et ego reficiam vos, dicit Dominus.’"
Pius IX’s sympathies for the Confederacy are plainly obvious. But now lets get weirder. Now lets discuss the assassination of Abe Lincoln. We will continue this thread in 15 mins
Did you know that John Wilkes Booth was Catholic? Not only that, but most of the conspirators: David Herold, Samuel Arnold, Samuel Mudd, and Mary Surratt and her son John: Were all Catholic.
Even non-Catholics Michael O’Laughlen and George Atzerodt had names which implied they were most likely crypto Catholics themselves. The disproportionate amount of Catholics involved in the assassination cannot be ignored
Doing this whole thread public and not on substack so please hit me with a retweet if you enjoy it. Will be continuing with more damning evidence in a bit
The conspirators famously all met in Mary Suratts home, the first woman to be hung in the US for treason. Her son; however, was hidden by a Catholic priest. Smuggled out of the country to England, Surratt was then given shelter in a Catholic Church in Liverpool.
And then he went to Rome and joined the pope’s army.
Going to let you all chew on this for a day and then supply the most damning evidence tomorrow eheh
Not to be a J but i will probably just make this into a longer substack tommorow and lay the rest of it out there.
