ABU LAHAB'S PUNISHMENT IS LESSENED EVERY MONDAY BECAUSE HE FREED THE SLAVE THAT INFORMED HIM ABOUT THE BIRTH OF THE PROPHET ﷺ OUT OF EXCITEMENT.
This is mentioned in the Sahih of Imam Bukhāri 5101.
In Fathul Bāri Vol. 9/48, Al-Hāfidh Ibn Hajar al-Asqalāni explains the meaning of this hadith by quoting from Imam as-Suhayli who says: “Abu Lahab's punishment is reduced on Mondays because the Prophet ﷺ was born in it.”.
In his Sharh Vol 5/195, Ibn Battal infers same. He even went on to mention the case of Abu Talib bn AbdulMuttalib (although scholars differ over his kufr). He said “reduction of Abu Talib's punishment is more than that of Abu Lahab, because the latter used to harm the Prophet ﷺ”
Imam al-Hāfidh Al Jazari also said in 'Urf Ta'rif: “If Abu Lahab, a kafir that was condemned in the Qur'an is receiving lesser punishment on Mondays due to happiness over his birth, then what is your consideration for a Muslim monotheist that is happy over him?!”.
- Imam San'āni also mentions it in his Musannaf 7/478
- Imam Al Bayhaqi mentions it in Dalā-ilun Nubuwwa
- Ibn Kathīr also mentions it in Bidaya wan-Nihaya 1/224.
- Imam Shaybāni in Hadā-iqul Anwār 1/134
- Al-Hāfidh al-Baghawi in Sharhi Sunnah 9/76
- Al-'Amiriy in Bahjatul Muhāfil 1/41
- Imam Suyouti in Husnul Maqsad p. 66.
- Muhammad al-'Alawi al-Makki in Hawlul Ihtifāl p.21.
- Ahmad Babakar in Hujaj al Baaligha p. 9
Nasirud-Deen ad-Dimashqi even said:
إذا كان هذا كافراً جاء ذمه
بتبت يداه في الجحيم مخدا
أتى أنه في يوم الاثنين دائماً
يخفف عنه بالسرور بأحمدا
ما الظن بالعبد الذي كان عمره
بأحمد مسرورا ومات موحدا
“if a kafir who is condemned to Hell in the Qur'ān receives reduction in his punishment every Monday due to his excitement on his birth, then what do you think of a Servant who is happy over his birth and died as a monotheist”!?.
This particular incident is common knowledge to whoever goes to Maulid. But it is odd to those who don't. This is because they are starved of stories that show the magnitude of the Rasul.
The fact that freeing a slave was what Abu Lahab did on the Maulid to earn himself this reward also stands to show that it is NOT ONLY FASTING that one can do in order to mark the Honored birth, as some people claim.
May Allah grant us understanding.
