Behind the ritual of "Passover" is there a scientific method of preventing Ergot Plague ?
The Hunting of Chametz/leaven/fungal spores takes place every Passover in spring , right at the time when the risk of ergotism in grain is the highest. Every bit of bread containing yeast/leaven/Chametz must be found and destroyed
The even burn all the leavened bread found anywhere amongst their people, people who were often living in poverty. Why would they destroy the bread? Why is leaven/Chametz unclean in the spring?
Chametz is the Hebrew word for the fungal leavening spores used in bread making. During Passover extremely precise cleansing of all fungal spores are done in the home
In order to prepare a kitchen for Passover either fire, steam or boiling water must be poured over every surface. This was hundreds of years before modern hygiene and germ theory BTW. It was a perfect method to prevent foul spores entering the community
"Unleavened bread shall be eaten throughout the seven days; and nothing leavened shall be seen among you, nor shall any leaven be seen among you in all your borders."
Exodus
