How to use a blockchain explorer (etherscan) to find alpha:
Etherscan can give you $1000’s worth of research… for free!
You’ve just got to learn how to use it!
Here are my top tips that you can learn in just FIVE minutes!
In this thread I’m going to teach you:
- What is etherscan?
- Tracking wallets
- Finding wallets that are early
- Vetting wallets
- Finding alpha
- Filtering wallets token history
- Researching tokens
1: What is Etherscan?
It’s a block explorer for Ethereum that lets you see EVERYTHING that is happening on chain!
You can use it to your advantage if you learn how!
For this thread, we are focusing on wallet tracking…
2: Why bother tracking wallets?
It is in fact one of the best ways to see where the smart money is going, and how much size they are using.
Want to find alpha? You got to learn from smart money
3: Find the wallets that are early!
Go and find the tokens that have been performing well recently, filter the transactions by clicking last.
This will allow you to see who bought in size… early, you now have access to their wallet address, note these addresses down.
4: Further vetting
Look at these addresses and see what other token transactions have been made that have outperformed, do they have a track record for doing this?
If yes then keep hold of their address.
If not then ignore that address, perhaps they got lucky.
5: Finding the alpha
Now you have got your list of alpha-filled wallets that have a proven track record with their sizing and allocation…
Now what?
You find the tokens the address has interacted with most recently by filtering ERC-20 transactions - latest token transactions.
6: Filtering through the tokens
You now can see the tokens this address has interacted with:
Are they going in with a similar size to their previous high-conviction plays?
What are they now buying?
Make a list of the tokens this wallet is buying and how much of their portfolio are they allocating to it (a $100k allocation to them might be 0.1%, a low-risk bet for them)
7: Research these tokens
Can you see why this position has been taken?
Does it give you the same kind of conviction?
You can then decide whether you will place a bet of a similar size (portfolio % terms) to where the smart money is going, or not!
8: Summary
Find the smart money wallets
Find a proven track record
Find new positions this wallet has taken
Research these tokens
Make your own thesis/plan
Execute
Do the top g’s use blockchain explorers for research purposes?
Maybe wallet tracking is not seen as useful for them?
What are they utilising? (Tagging in the hope for some replies)
