Ife bronze head (1400s): 18 of these life-like heads were accidentally found in the Wunmonije Compound in Ife, the spiritual home of the Yoruba. The realism and sophisticated craftsmanship of the objects challenged Western conceptions of African art. #yoruba
The Ife heads were made from a technique called lost-wax. What that means is that the the casting consisted of making a wax model with a core from some other substance enclosing the model in a mould, melting away the way, and pouring molten metal or glass into the void. #yoruba
