How to identify your core values
A thread to stop being spineless and live by your own code
Courage
Freedom
Beauty
Family
Growth
Endurance
Loyalty
These are all noble values to follow, but do you know your own values you stand for?
Most people go through their lives without any guidelines
Without any compass to show them the way
This causes them to feel lost, and never in touch with their own soul
The problem with living in such a way is that humans seek structure and guidance.
If you do not create your own values, over time you'll adopt other people's or organizations' values - and they don't always have your best interest in their heart.
So what can be done?
The solution to this problem is to define your own values
To take the time and really think about your own values, what they mean to you, and why you should follow them every single day.
Let us explore how:
1. Look back at your own family
Are there values you would like to adopt from your father, mother, or grandparents?
Their values may or may not align with you and it's fine - take what's good, and discard of the rest.
2. Look back to your past
Are there any remarkable, noteworthy moments in your past that changed your perspective of life?
Are there any events that were meaningful to you?
Dig why - what in them is so special? They will hint towards your values
3. Write down what matters to you in life
Write down what you stand for, and what is important to you nowadays.
What would you be willing to die for? Family? Honor? Loyalty?
They are a big hint at your core values
4. Think about how you would live life
Visualize the future, what type of life do you see?
Is it simple, streamlined, and modest? Or is it grandiose, luxurious, and full of adventure?
Maybe somewhere in the middle.
Look within for the answer.
5. Evaluate your current situation
Maybe your values are hiding in plain sight - in doing what you're already doing, contributing to the place you're currently at.
Think about what about your life today is perfectly fine, and align with that.
6. Meditate deeply and look for insight
Go meditate for 30 minutes.
At the start of the meditation ask your higher self for guidance, to align with the question - what are your core values?
Go into deep meditation.
Come back and journal your thoughts - repeat as necessary.
7. Ask close people for their input
Don't take everything they say to heart, just observe, and look for patterns.
What they say may be a false image you project.
Look to see if you enjoy it or want to change it completely.
8. Embrace uncertainty
Whatever your situation is now, you can always change it - looking for your core values may be a hard or easy task depending on your own awareness.
Whenever resistance arises - choose to work with it and accept it.
9. Look at lists, or do a values test
It may help you further align with your core values, and find them deep inside your heart
Print the list of values. Delete anything you don't like.
Eliminate over time until you stay with 3-5 main values that guide you.
When you find your core values, print them out, write them down everywhere, and review them often.
This is the only way to live by your own code - and stick to it.
