How to discover your unique voice as a writer:
All of us have a unique way of looking at the world.
Yet one of the biggest questions I receive is how to have a unique voice as a writer.
It all comes from overthinking.
Let's take a deeper look:
1. What do you believe?
Most people haven't got a clue what they stand for.
They end up trying to please everyone.
The problem with that?
We are all infinitely complicated and different.
You may know the expression:
"One man's trash is another man's treasure."
This normally applies to objects.
But this is also true with ideas.
One person may detest what you say, but another person may feel unlocked.
It's your responsibility to preach what you see as true.
2. Be brave
Once you feel confident in what you feel, don't be afraid to post it.
You may face pushback. However, over time, you will build an audience that trusts you.
You're not just writing to please.
You're posting to pursue the deepest questions.
That earns respect.
3. Read
If you see a writer with a great style, they will have immersed themselves in great writing.
Painters are inspired by great art.
Musicians are inspired by great albums.
Poets are inspired by great poetry.
This is no different for writers.
If you spend your time reading monotonous, Instagram captions, your mind will gravitate to that style.
If you immerse yourself in the works of Dostoyevsky, Tolkien or Gladwell, your mind will gravitate to those styles.
Surround yourself with that which you wish to become.
4. Study rhetoric devices
A great musician knows exactly why one chord connects to another.
It is designed to spark a certain emotion along with a certain lyric.
Writing is no different, but our chords are rhetoric devices.
Let's take an example - Anaphora.
The repetition of the same phrase at the start of a new sentence or clause.
- Get busy living or get busy dying.
- Give me liberty or give me death.
- We came, we saw, we conquered.
You might recognise this technique.
You may have even used it before by chance.
But great writers know when to employ it.
It appeals to rhythm, memory and motivation.
Here are some other examples of rhetoric devices you could study:
- Alliteration
- Cacophony
- Foreshadowing
- Hyperbole
- Hyperbaton
- Portmanteau
- Simile
There are thousands. But if you master the basics, you will be more unique than 99% of other writers.
5. Consistency
The king.
If you don't write consistently, your style will stagnate.
You will struggle to maintain consistency of thought.
Your ideas will become sporadic and lose focus.
As soon as that happens, your audience notices.
Set up a writing sanctuary.
The same place, same time every day.
Surround yourself with inspiration.
Posters. Quotes. Pictures.
Make sure you don't miss a day.
If you do, forgive yourself and get back on the horse.
You don't magically discover your writer's voice.
It is forged in the fire of you pursuing the truth every day.
You don't find the words.
The words find you.
