These early railway carriages are a good illustration of how much old stuff gets dragged along into the first versions of new things. At first even the inventors of trains couldn't think of them as more than sequences of linked horse carriages.
Though to be fair, it can help ease the transition to retain some old stuff. People knew how to make carriages like this, and how to ride in them.
This is why I never worry when a startup initially describes itself as "x for y." That doesn't automatically make it a derivative idea. Lots of truly new ideas were initially conceived in such terms. Maybe most.
