The repatriation process of the Benin Bronzes is actually a huge stepping stone for all displaced indigenous art and spiritual tech worldwide.
It is actually a big deal.
I want everyone to consider the spiritual disharmony that is occurring in this world. Don’t you think displaced artwork and spiritual tech (holding divinities and ancestral lineages) from various cultures worldwide contributes to this imbalance? Everything must go back.
I already did my little scholarly vent here and if I start again, I won’t stop.
All eyes should be on museums that profit on looted and displaced goods.
All hands should be pressuring institutions to recontexualize their display of these artworks and spiritually maintain them.
If you look at indigenous art from various cultures worldwide, you cannot separate spirit from them. These institutions attempt to do so and this is why they contribute to colonialism and religious erasure.
If you know my scholarly interest on studying the interconnections of African Art & Spirituality, you know I am very passionate about this topic.
I’m currently working at a major museum and they appreciate my perspectives on creating change in this industry. We have work to do.
