Most users on Twitter suck at building relationships.
• "Hi {Name}"
• "Can I pick your brain now?"
• "You got a $ you're not using anymore?"
Terrible approaches which grant 0 responses.
Let me make building relationships easy for you in just 9 steps:
🧵🧵
Thank you for opening this.
At the end of this thread, you'll:
• understand the merits of networks
• learn the exact 9-step framework to start a great relationship
( Ps: If you're one of my 100+ unread DMs, taking action on these steps MIGHT get you a response )
Why do you need to form relationships?
1) To leverage their audience for growth on Twitter ( more eyes on your brand )
2) A good headstart in making friendships ( especially when you suck at it in real life )
3) Easy access to valuable advice almost 24/7
When you have the 'Why', The 'How' becomes easier ✍🏼
Never forget these:
1. It takes two STRONG people to form a relationship
2. The best way to form relationships is to give without the expectation of a returning favour
All being said.... It's Value O'clock!
(1/9) Look Good
Before you think of striking up a conversation with someone, you need to look attractive - at least to them.
You want to meet a CEO? Get a suit
Want to meet a swimmer? Grab those trunks
In this case, we're talking about Twitter. So:
Since you have no face, or any physical presentation of yourself...
What do you think you'll be judged by?
Ding! Ding! 🥳🥳
You guessed right! (i hope you did)
It's your Profile.
Go through this for profile improvement (if need be):
(2/9) Locate Your Prey
Only reach out to people you're interested in.
To people:
• you want to be like
• you wish to work for/with
• you spot the potential for mutual benefits
Next:
Follow them + turn on notifications.
This will make the next step easier:
(3/9) Hit their favourite buttons
Likes may not be cash but they do warm the heart.
We, creators, work tirelessly to provide the best content we can. Hitting the like & RT button is the easiest way to say:
"I appreciate you"
Implementing this is pivotal to the next step:
(4/9) Send in a Mood-Booster
This is your 1st contact. You want to be different.
( At this point, they've seen you often on their notifications - They know you )
• Select one of their tweets
(a low-performing one)
• Send a message talking about the insight you got from it.
(5/9) Ask about their interest
There is a high chance your mood booster gets a positive response.
(If it doesn't, move on)
When it does, Keep the convo flowing by asking about their interest.
- When did they start the journey?
- What're they working on?
- What is their goal?
(6/9) Slide in with Value
This is the apex of a good DM. Most never get here because they screw the previous steps.
Now: You know their interests.
Next: See where you can help
If you can:
- offer advice
- send them helpful resources
- give them your product for FREE (🤷🏼‍♀)
Don't go in for a connection without making the 1st investment.
I mean... Do you withdraw from your ATM before or after your deposit?
If you have nothing to offer:
• Connect them to someone in your network that can help
• Keep the convo interesting until you get something
7) Invite them for a call
Face-to-Face > Voice Calls > Chatting
Having a video conversation is the closest thing to reality. It's priceless.
It's the only medium that shows your mannerisms (aka real self). Calls are the best.
8) Stalk with Value
Keep the show rolling. Continue:
- communicating with them
- engaging with their content
- searching for resources to give them
9) Time to Reap
If you've been playing your cards right... It'll be impossible to get a NO when you ask for something.
It'll be easier to get them to:
• Offer advice
• Invite you to events
• Retweet your tweets
• Give you a testimonial
• throw opportunities your way
Bonus Tips:
• Talk like you would in real life. Be real
• Starting the DM with a video recording is best. THEY'LL NEVER FORGET IT.
• You can use this approach on people of all audience sizes. Big accounts are people too.
Mega-Bonus Tip:
Don't connect with every creator in sight all in the name of "networking".
You might think:
"More friends = more opportunities"
Guess what?! Its true. But still...
20 solid friends > 270 average ones.
Less is more.
This is how relationships are & should be built!
Imagine you had such an experience with someone.
Won't you feel special?
Won't Twitter become a better place?
Do your part to build this imagination
NOTE: This will bomb/fail if you aren't genuine.
Here is a ReCap:
1) Look Good
2) Locate your Prey
3) Hit their favourite buttons
4) Send in a Mood-booster
5) Ask about their interests
6) Slide in with Value
7) Invite them for a call
8) Stalk with Value
