Witnessed huge lightning in Mirzapur the past weekend! Lightning causes many deaths every year across the world.
A thread to know more about lightning. It may save your life
- When to be worried about it
- What to do
Pls retweet for wider reach to help everyone ๐Ÿงต
Concepts:
- Lightning tends to strike the tallest object around
- Lightning travels through conductors like metal pipes, wires etc
How to find how far lightning is from you
- Count number of seconds between the flash of lightning and the sound of thunder
- Divide by 3 to get distance in kilometres to the lightning
=> 3 seconds = 1 km, 9 seconds = 3 kms etc
30 second lightning rule or When to seek shelter
When you see lightning, count the time until you hear thunder. If that is less than 30 seconds, thunderstorm is close enough to be dangerous.
=> Seek Shelter
Safe Shelters:
- House that has four walls and a roof
- Fully enclosed vehicle with windows rolled up
In case of very heavy lightning - Indoor Tips:
- Be away from water as lightning can travel through metal pipes
- Do not use any equipment connected to electric sockets
- Stay away from windows, doors, porches
-Do not lie on concrete floors or lean against walls.
Outdoor Tips:
- No place outside is safe. Go indoors.
- Do not stay in open vehicles like rickshaw, bike etc
- Stay away from tall objects like poles, trees as lightning strikes high objects
- Come out of swimming pools or any water places/activities
- Do not use umbrellas
If you cannot go indoor:
- Do not lie flat on ground. Sit in squat position with hands over head
- Do no sit under big trees
- Get out of ponds, lakes, rivers
- Stay away from objects that conduct electricity (barbed wire fences, power lines etc.)
