Marvel Cinematic Universe is the greatest movie franchise in history!
But now our beloved 14yr old empire is dying a slow, painful death.
here’s what’s happening:
MCU’s tied in universe was a beautiful experience for the people who enjoyed the feel of this connected storyline.
Until it was a feature, not a necessity.
You could watch most of the movies without watching the previous ones (except maybe Endgame)
Now they are using that connected feel as a closing in necessity which creates friction.
A necessity to pay Disney when you don’t want to buy their subscription for any other thing.
The slow build up and unfolding of a main thread of events is what gets Marvel their regular business,
but the major money is earned when even the non-regulars watch the films.
If you hadn’t seen Wanda Vision, you’ll have no idea what happened to Wanda,
who are these two kids and what the hell is happening—in Doctor Strange into the Multiverse of Madness.
And even though it makes for a solid business model for Disney+,
cutting off storylines for normal people who don’t follow everything makes the whole movie experience very dull.
And you’re not making it exclusively for the Marvel Community right?
I understand there had to be a down-phase after the mega “Endgame” but it didn’t have to be this dull and boring
With so many experiments across genres, Marvel has screwed up
A bunch of new characters are being launched and they make little effort to make us care about them.
Maybe it wasn’t the best time to introduce new characters
To engage people, especially after something as big as Endgame, you need nostalgia.
Marvel’s strength of making superhero movies out of different genres and giving complete control to different kind of creators and directors is what’s harming them now.
Because they don’t make it feel like Marvel anymore, they’ve made their loyal community lab rats
In She Hulk, I don’t feel anything for her.
There was no proper origin story, no purpose of this character, and no reason to think of her as a hero.
And that makes it a poor character development.
Even if they are bringing back old characters, most of them were side-kicks.
It’s very difficult to make people watch side characters that they didn’t care about that much.
Some people are not liking the whole “female heroes” thing.
Personally I relate with the female characters (as long as they are not calling out too many social issues) as much as male characters.
And I’m super pumped to watch Shuri become the new Black Panther (haha sorry if I spoiled it, but it was kinda obvious by now wasn’t it?) or Riri Williams becoming Iron Heart.
What irritates people is the fact that there’s seems like a hidden agenda behind certain dialogues.
Because we aren’t watching marvel for social issues, we’re watching for entertainment.
Your piece of art should be separated from your belief system.
Marvel is known for consistently bringing out quality movies, but that’s just not present right now
Maybe too much production has impacted their quality
This leads to erosion of brand loyalty
With that, the Marvel shows haven’t found a great fit yet.
There’s literally no interest build up at the start because they are extremely slow.
And you can’t even binge watch because they release one episode per week.
I’m a superfan and even I’ve started losing interest in them after Hawkeye.
They muscle everything for the last 2 episodes and that just mixes up everything.
Feels more like a stretched out version of a 2.5 hour movie into a 6-7 hour show for no reason.
And if you think about it, making people watch 6-9 hrs of some show just because they don’t want to miss the sync with the larger Marvel storyline is a bad sell
But you know the best part about Marvel? They listen to the fan complaints and they’ve already started fixing the MCU
First stop: Introducing characters we love back into the MCU.
Imagine after all this pain, if they would have recasted Wolverine, fans would have erupted.
So, they are bringing back Hugh Jackman’s classic portrayal of Wolverine in Deadpool 2.
Next stop: Fixing the D+ Problem
Since Disney+ series feel like a movie being stretched far too long, they’ve turned Armour Wars into a movie instead of a Disney+ show
And speculation is that they are bringing back Robert Downey Jr. as an AI in that movie. That’s a great pull.
Marvel has faced this dullness before in Phase 2, right after Avengers 1
And they were quick to fix it and gave us quality movies like Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame while introducing new characters like Dr. Strange.
And being a Marvel Comics fan, I can confirm the whole Kang storyline is the best in Marvel history.
So, the future feels more promising.
Provided they do it for the love of stories, not for cash grab.
