Storytelling is the ultimate way to connect with people and build a successful business.
However, 99% of people don't believe they have a tale to tell.
Here are 7 ways you can unlock your inner storyteller:
First things first...
You may think your stories aren't as good as others.
This isn't the issue.
It's that you believe your story won't add value to a conversation.
But how can you begin to think that way?
We live in a world with myriad different possibilities and outcomes.
Your unique angle is what makes you special.
The world deserves, nay, needs to hear it.
So, here are those 7 tips I mentioned to help you live a life full of tales worth telling:
1) Choose Your Destination
A story has to know where it ends.
Here are some possible end goals of a story:
- Clarity
- Humour
- Purpose
- Discovery
Choose the reason why you're telling a story in the first place.
People can tell when you're doing it just for the sake of it.
2) Don't Over-Prepare
A journey from A-B can still make an interesting story.
But what makes a journey even more interesting?
The small detours, the little excursions away from the expected.
These can add spice and show how an unexpected lesson was learnt in the process.
3) The Hero's Journey
This is at the core of every successful protagonist in a story.
Study and understand the 4 stages.
Why is it important they undertake each part in succession?
The next you watch your favourite film with a protagonist, see if you can fill in the gaps.
4) You Don't Have To Be Funny
Humour is always a useful tool.
But it can also hold you back if you don't know how to wield such a sword.
The good news?
People desire an emotional connection more than a humorous one.
Focus on placing emotion into your stories first.
5) Read Fiction
There's a reason why we still remember the great works of fiction.
Wisdom.
The knowledge contained within these stories contains something so fundamental that it transcends generations.

6) Appeal To Emotion
There's an agreement among psychologists that there are 6 basic emotions:
- Anger
- Disgust
- Fear
- Happiness
- Sadness
- Surprise
Decide which one you're appealing to at which point in the story.
You're the captain of the ship - mark the course.
7) The Admiration Rule
Here's a story fundamental:
You admire a character more for trying than you do for their success.
We can all recognise the strength it takes to get up and go again when the wind of doubt is pushing you down.
And that's the thing, folks.
Rule 7 doesn't just apply to characters.
It applies to you.
If you think you're a bad storyteller, just try.
Get out there. Live some crazy experiences. Return and attempt to convey the wisdom imparted to you.
I love hearing tales of people transforming their lives and escaping the matrix.
Even if they sometimes struggle to find the words to do so, it's the effort to share such wisdom that makes it fascinating.
Just have a go today.
You won't regret it.
