Every piece of interview advice I could come up with after 15 years:
1. Never ask about salary in an interview. Ask questions that actually help you stand out.
2. Master the art of storytelling.
You will be remembered for telling your story in an interesting, relatable way.
This is the most important tip in this thread. Take it seriously.
3. Investigate the company beforehand. You'll show real interest and be better prepared overall.
4. Practice interviews with a friend/family member. This will build confidence and reduce nerves.
5. Arrive early. Allow yourself time to gather your thoughts and mentally prepare.
6. Be kind to the receptionist. The interview starts when you enter the building.
7. Understand the job description inside and out. Never go into an interview without reading it.
8. Overflow with confidence, not arrogance. Be sure of yourself and your skills without coming across as a know-it-all.
9. Remember body language. Facial expressions, posture, etc.
10. Know your weaknesses. Be honest and have a plan to overcome the challenges of the job. You will be asked about weaknesses, so be prepared with a real response.
11. Stop googling answers. You'll memorize the same responses as everyone else and you'll be forgotten.
12. Identify what makes you a unique human, then share how your uniqueness makes you the best fit for the position.
13. Vary your response times. When it's an easy question, jump on it. If you need to think, take the time to think. Silence is ok in an interview, I promise.
14. Smile more. Nerves can make this challenging, but clamming up in an interview is detrimental. Smile, laugh, be relatable.
15. Dress to impress. It's an hour of your life, if you can't dress nice for that, you're sending a bad message.
16. Don't interrupt. If you need clarification on something, wait until they are done talking to ask.
17. Take notes. This will show that you're serious and organized. Simply showing up with a notebook sends a message that you have your stuff together.
18. Know your passions and communicate them in the interview. Everyone wants more money, you want the job because it aligns with your passions.
19. Bring a bottle of water to help with dry mouth. You can also take a drink when thinking through a challenging question.
20. Get them to talk about themselves. This is a hack to being more memorable. They'll remember you because they shared a part of themselves with you.
21. Be concise. Going on and on talking about unrelated topics will convey that you're a bad communicator.
22. Ask killer questions.
-What’s a recent change you made based on employee feedback?
- What's the biggest challenge facing the team today?
- What does greatness look like in this role?
Pick 1 to help you prepare for a 2nd interview and 1-2 to learn more about the culture.
23. Ask for a tour. Another hack for leaving a good impression. You may not get a tour, but you asked, and that can be all it takes.
24. Pay attention to how you smell. You want to smell nice, but too much cologne/perfume can be as bad as body odor.
25. Reframe interviews as simple conversations with other people. If you go in feeling like your life hinges on this interview, it's going to end poorly.
26. Never speak negatively in an interview. No matter the topic, negativity will be a turnoff for a hiring manager.
