How did an entire country believe obvious lies that caused unspeakable harm for generations?
You need to understand the strategies of manipulation that Nazi propaganda used to inject ideas into a populace.
These 15 tactics still have power:
1. Appeal to emotions. Avoid reason.
2. Reduce idea to slogan. Repeat constantly
3. Recruit true believers. Make them spread and repeat idea
4. Disrupt & hijack existing belief structures
5. Take power. Use to spread idea further.
6. Criticize & attack enemies of the state constantly
7. Identify one special enemy for extreme vilification
8. Never show the other side of argument
9. Use intimidation & fear to accelerate adoption of idea
10. Gain control of media & entertainment channels
11. Subvert educational system
12. Use public spectacle for social pressure
13. Create symbols of loyalty
14. Channel discontent into hatred of specific targets
15. Demand submission, not belief
These strategies, which are drawn from the writings of Hitler and Goebbels, were indispensible to the Third Reich's rise.
Goebbels, Minister of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda, once said:
β€œThere are two ways to make a revolution. You can blast your enemy with machine guns... Or you can transform the nation through a revolution of the spirit."
Could this still happen today?
