1996 was an Olympic year, it will always be a year most Nigerians will remember as the year we had the best football team. But for me, it will be the year I almost drowned.
The Olympic Games was shown on television and one of the events that got my attention was swimming.
I really enjoyed how the swimmers dived into the water. I was in awe! And I made up my mind that the next time I visit my village, I will replicate that dive.
That Christmas, I went to the village with my parents to visit my Grandparents.
One of my cousins said we should all go to the stream, I jumped up and said I was going with them.
As we got to the stream, they started to run and dived into the water. As I watched my cousins dive, I knew this was my opportunity.
I ran and took a dive and that was the last thing I remember. That was the day I learnt a vital lesson, you need to know how to swim before you dive.
Why is this story connected to photography? As a photography tutor, so many people send DMs asking if i could teach them.
A couple of days ago, I announced that will be teaching photography classes in November, and so many people have reached out, most of them beginners. But one common question these beginners ask is, will you teach editing?
Most of them don’t care about learning how to photograph
Listening to these beginners reminded me of just one thing “You need to know how to swim before you dive.”
Editing is called “Post production” for a reason. It’s something you do after you’ve done the main thing, in this case, photographing.
Why do you want to learn that first?
You can’t do a great post production when you can’t even produce.
Except you want to be a retoucher, you don’t learn editing before photographing.
As a beginner photographer, you need to learn how to photograph.
Learning photography is learning about
-Lighting and how how light works.
-How to shape and modify light.
-How to control light with Aperture, ISO and shutter speed. (Exposure Triangle)
- Color theory, color contrast
- Negative space
- Leading lines
- visual hierarchy
- framing
- composition
-Scale
-Balance
- Analysis
- Training your eyes to see
Amongst other things
That’s the reason I don’t teach retouching/editing. I teach photography. And I hope that every beginner photographer will spend time to learn what’s most important in our craft, the art of photographing.
