Sacking Xavi on the account of not winning trophies this season would be beyond ridiculous.
Results in Barça's context have almost ALWAYS meant trophies.
However, I'll take sustainable long-term progress over any kind of short-term success.
That's what results should mean.
My parameters aren't based on him winning trophies this season. They're based on whether he'll improve & optimise the team for that long-term success.
We can win LaLiga & Copa solely based on our individual quality. But that won't get us back into the elite.
We need more.
Of course, we also can't go trophyless for season upon season. That's the price you pay for being at a historically successful club.
Xavi will get time but not an infinite amount of it. Neither should he.
But this season we need to know what he can give us beyond trophies.
You measure progress by how well we're set up structurally, how optimised our squad gets to suit our style & how our players are coached to improve.
But being at Barça, you also HAVE to hit some certain targets to fulfill the financial & sporting goals.
Just to give this another plug.
I've written my thoughts on Xavi for @BarcaFutbolLive and have outlined three main aspects on which I'll hold him accountable this season.
Can he optimise Barça for the long-term?
