445km is how far the gift took us.
Join me on the journey to Nyumanzi refugee camp a place where chess was a gender game.
A thread.
On the invitation of Samuel, we started our journey to a new place, new experience and ready for new challenges. Boys riding bodas, youths sitting on the road sides and a whole lot of small businesses is what your presented with.
Learning about what they do, what challenges they face and what's their hope for the future is was a very outstanding experience which showed me that I don't even stand a chance to complain in life.
I saw situations that were harsh but the poise of hope and confidence of the kids going to school, mothers and fathers putting in the work and youths hustling to make life happen was a great one.
In this town, chess is only played by men and the culture around is that women are for the kitchen and house. Boys and men can do what they want, when and how. This something am passionate about. Should freedom of thought, dreaming, aiming for, working and imagination be given!?
Personally I believe that nothing that was freely given should be begged for since no one holds power over the other. Less words more action. I took it upon myself to challenge and add on the great works of the men and women that chose a different path by introducing chess to all
Flexibility is an asset on this journey. It's not a matter of explaining what you know. The beauty lies in meeting the person where they're and bringing them along. What we used to teach was foreign so I had to pick from what they experience each day.Which maths and social studies
Now the class was one and we had more engagements. The shy become confident and free. Environment allowed failing, trying and being free since no one judged. We were all students.
This gift visits places no one can reach and it aligns it. It brings people together and for a moment they just want to dive in and play. It frees souls and opens up worlds best understood by experience and sets a thirst that only results can quench.
I had the honour of meeting Mrs Jane the headteacher of Nyumanzi primary school. When you listen to her talk, you know of the past, present and predict the future of the girls in her community. "Thank you for believing in my kids and more so the my girls" she said.
Thank you so much Nyumanzi primary school for having us and sharing with us. Your loved🤍. The hope, perseverance, smiles and focus, may the gift of chess be your safe place and set you on your beautiful journeys.
