I begin with the Name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
As-Siwak (tooth stick) a forgotten Sunnah
Islam is a religion that teaches its adherents to maintain cleanliness and to take care of odor and any foul smell. The human mouth is a source of bad smell, hence the Prophet SAW has commanded the Muslims to use As-Siwak (tooth-stick) to brush their mouths in some specific times
Generally, as a way of encouragement,
The Prophet (ο·Ί) said, "The Miswak (tooth-stick) cleanses and purifies the mouth and pleases the Rubb (Allah).”
[An-Nasa'i and Ibn Khuzaimah].
Hence, if you hope for Allah to be pleased with you, use the Miswak.
Specifically, The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, β€œWere it not hardship for my nation, I would have commanded them to use the toothstick with every prayer as they perform ablution.”
Musnad Ahmad
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Were it not for the fact that I did not want to make things too hard for my ummah, I would have commanded them to use the siwaak at every time of prayer.
Bukhari & Muslim
This is forgotten amongst us. Please use it
Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "I have told you repeatedly to use the Siwak. (The Prophet (ο·Ί) put emphasis on the use of the Siwak.)
Bukhari
Let us heed this command though not waajib but a strong Sunnah.
When you wake up at night to perform Tahajjud, use the miswak (tooth-stick) to clean your teeth.
It was narrated that Hudhaifah said:
"When the Messenger of Allah (ο·Ί) got up to pray tahajjud at night, he would brush his teeth with the siwak.
Hence, always have your miswak with you. Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin:
Ablution water and tooth-stick were placed by the side of the Prophet (ο·Ί). When he got up during the night (for prayer), he relieved himself, then he used the tooth-stick.
Sunan Abi Dawud
Use Miswak when entering your house
Shuraih asked 'Aishah:
"What would the Messenger of Allah (ο·Ί) do as soon as he entered the house?" She replied: "(He would use) the siwak." Sunan Abi Dawud
Use the Miswak before reading the Quran
The Prophet SAW said, β€œβ€¦..purify your mouths for the Quran.” Musnad of Bazaar declared as Hasan by al-Albani in Sahih at-Targheeb
It is sad that today, you hardly see Muslims using the Miswak. Please, kindly buy for yourself and others. You can distribute to people for the sake of Allah and remind them of the ahadith on its virtues. Revive this Sunnah. Sunnah is our pride, let us pride ourselves with it
And irrespective of whether our teeth are clean or not, it is a strong sunnah to use the miswak on the occasions mentioned above simply because it is pleasing to the Rabb (Allah).
The last thing the Prophet SAW did before his death was to brush his mouth with Miswak. The hadith of Aisha RA in Sahihul Bukhari
β€œSo he brushed (istanna) his teeth as nice as he could." There was a water container (rakwa) available at his hand with some water in.
He put his hand in it and wiped his face with it and said:
"There is no god but Allah. Death is full of agonies."
Sahih Al-Bukhari,
Even on his deathbed, the Prophet SAW echoed the words of Tauheed.
