Genetic testing has shown that only about 40% of men have procreated in human history. At the same time over 80% of women who have existed have procreated. This means that throughout history the top men have had on average 2 women. There are several realities indicated by this:
- Men for women have been tools for survival. Throughout time, if a man had enough resources, he would get multiple women. This means men at the bottom of the social order did not get mates because they couldn't guarantee survival. It is purely evolutionary.
- Women love opportunistically. If Man A was a great hunter and had enough to feed 7 people yet had a girl and Man B was mediocre and had just enough to feed himself yet single, girl would pick Man A. This is how women guaranteed their survival through history: tied to winners.
- A man who fell out of love with and subsequently left his aging wife would jeopardize the survival of their offspring so nature left a fail-safe mechanism to ensure men didnβt leave their wives even when they were no longer as aesthetically pleasing: unconditional love.
This is why although high value men often take on younger mistresses later in life (because they are hotter) they still profess undying love and devotion for their wives. They arenβt usually lying when they say this. (Brings us to why cheating is different for most men and women)
On the other hand, a woman who remained in love with a man who lost all his provisioning ability would severely limit her chances of passing along her genes. Women's genes could not afford to be irrationally devoted to a man without the capacity to feed and protect his children.
And this is why nature left in place an inverse fail-safe for women: conditional love. The truth is, all female love is conditional in one way or another. Women marry men either on the basis of manifested accomplishments or the potential for such accomplishments.
Before you start disparaging women for being pragmatic in such matters:

Since women invariably flock to the highest quality males this pushes men to continually strive for improvements, to themselves and the world, creating useful tools, crafting beautiful works of art etc We can thank hypergamy for the fact that we get to enjoy these comforts today.
Finally, this is purely from an evolutionary or biological standpoint. There are factors like emotions, love, mental instability etc which usurp the natural order in some cases. However, this is applicable to most people. Learn the game and play to win. Selah!
