Length limits on writing samples make sense, but I've seen a few 'no more than 20 pages' limits this season and maybe that's a bit too short? My shortest article runs 23 pages (with tables and bibliography; 19 w/o).
The thing is, the request is always clearly for published, peer-reviewed scholarship, so the next shortest genre here is the book review, typically sub-1000 words. That's a big step! Obviously I'm not going to send a book review.
Of course this is all kind of particular to me because I tend to write fewer, longer things when it comes to scholarship, which is very bad career strategy, I *should* write more, less substantial things, but the ideas come as they come.
Seems like adopting the 15,000 word limit that most journals in the field do would make more sense.
Anyway, I mean, I feel for the members of the committee for these places because they're going to get a zillion applicants since the job market's been frozen over for two years due to COVID, but then maybe request writing samples only from the long short list?
