Umar ibn Al-Khattab used to oppress Muslims before he accepted Islam. So much so that one of the companions remarked, "That man (Umar) won't accept Islam till his father's donkey accepts Islam..." And today Umar ibn Al-Khattab is only second to Abu Bakr from the Sahaba.
Qays ibn Aasim had buried 8 of his daughters before Allah blessed him with Islam (he practiced female infanticide earlier!!!).
Those who were formerly addicted to alcohol, accepted Islam, and abandoned it when Allah made it prohibited...
Amr ibn Al-Aas fought against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he hated him ﷺ in his days of ignorance. And finally he accepted Islam... (See Amr ibn Al-Aas narrating the story in Sahih Muslim #121...)
Can someone who killed the Prophet's ﷺ foster brother, uncle & friend accept Islam? Yes! Wahshi killed Hamza bin Abdul Muttalib (رضي الله عنه) during the Battle of Uhud with his javelin. He later killed the false prophet Musailimah with the same javelin after accepting Islam.
There are numerous names that could be added here from amongst the Sahaba &other than them,but this is enough. Whatever the past of an individual,"Allah guides to His Light whomsoever He Wills (Al-Quran 24:35)". So saying, "Islam is not for those with a bad past" isn't right.
