1. Recently in simulation drill China used nuclear anti-satellite weapons to destroy satellites in near-Earth orbits, like OneWeb & Starlink.
Why this move?
Satellites are game-changer in war. U.S. has banned all anti-satellite testing & plans to place a global ban via UN.๐Ÿง
2. Anti Satellite weapons have never been used in warfare till date.
Only few countries like China, India, Russia, and the United States have successfully shot down their own satellites to study and demonstrate anti-satellite ASAT technology.
3. India was severly criticised by west, media & pseudo environmentalists and even NASA for its first ASAT test in 2019.
A direct ascent ASAT tests are believed to be destructive in nature and generate debris in outer space which can pose a hazard to all other users of Space.
4. Hypocrisy of west to criticise India when US has been conducting ASAT tests since 1950s.
They have developed& perfected this technology & moved on to other more advanced non kinetic ASAT capabilities like laser.
So has Russia & China. UN ban would likely affect new states.
5. Satellite information has played vital role in recent war in Ukraine between NATO and Russia.
Elon Muskโ€™s StarLink has emerged as an 'Essential Part' of Ukraine military Infrastructure & Russia has also accused West of weaponising commercial satellites for military purpose.
6. Indiaโ€™s ISRO recently launched 36 British owned OneWeb satellites.
Launch was previously planned by Russia but demand for a guarantee that satellites would not be used for military purposes & that British government will divest its stake was rejected by UK.
7. OneWeb is building a space-based global communications network.
Its commercial satellites owned by companies from various countries like Japan, India, France etc.
Indiaโ€™s Bharti Global is also in partnership though all powers are with U.K government including military use.
8. So on one had the US seeks a ban on ASAT weapons for other countries since they already have the technology.
In parallel they plan to develop offensive space weapons for their own space station.
If satellites are weapons then disarming or not developing ASATs is foolish.
9. Many countries like UK, South Korea, Germany, Canada, New Zealand, Japan support US on the ban on ASAT testing.
Note all these countries are infamous for being US subordinate states with heavy U.S. military bases in their respective countries.
