A fantastic book that I have benefitted from in my own book on ḥadīth has been Ahmad Snobar’s amazing Min al-Nabī Ṣallallāhu ʿAlayhi Wasallam Ila’l Bukhārī. A monumental book that you will not be able to put down. The book is essentially a book on the history of the Sunnah.
He divides the book into various stages between the Prophet’s time and Al-Bukhārī emphasising the importance of the role of a critical environment found during the periods of the ṣaḥābah and tābiʿūn. He then touches on the issue of fabrication of aḥādīth.
He performs a deep-dive into the roles of Shuʿbah ibn al-Ḥajjāj (d.160 AH), Imām Mālik (d.179 AH), Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn (d.233 AH) and Imām al-Bukhārī (d.256 AH). A unique feature of the book is the fact that he ensures to reference the earliest primary source for every quote.
