I'm reading Lovecraft for the first time, and I do have a weird sense that the guy was a kind of prophet of the age of the fear of unaligned AGI, insofar as some terms that come to mind for the nameless horrors he gestures at are "magnitude, "vastness," & "alienness."
The other thing thatβs on-point about Lovecraft is the way his men of science are so inexorably drawn to searching out these alien, godlike beings. They use books & libraries to reveal these entities that they know will lead them to madness but nonetheless curiosity compels them.
Apropos of everything, these are among the first 20 or so images I ever made with a generative AI, in my second session with Midjourney.
