This military strategy is used by startups to dominate their competition.
Tesla, Uber, Facebook & Amazon all used it to win.
Here's a tactic you won't want to miss 👇:
The beachhead strategy is named after the WWII battle of Normandy.
Allied soldiers took control of the beachheads. From this position, they could overwhelm adjacent areas.
This is how 5-person startup teams can eventually beat 5k+ person companies.
Here's how...
This strategy has 3 steps:
Step 1: Identify a small but critical market.
Step 2: Focus only on that market until you're the dominant player.
Step 3: Once this is done. Expand into adjacent markets with momentum.
Here's 4 methods used by the biggest companies in the world...
1. Geographic
Uber → started in one small area to ensure that they were delivering on their promise - and delivering well.
Over time, they expanded regionally, until they were the biggest ride-share company in the world
2. Product Category
Amazon → This $1T+ company started by selling books.
Why?
Because books had consistent customer demand & it could offer a wider selection than any bookstore in the world.
With time they added adjacent categories.
Now they sell everything!
3. Demographic
Tesla → At first, Tesla only sold high-end sports cars valued above $100,000+.
It was not possible to build an affordable electric car with quality and scale.
Now they are valued at $710B (bigger than GM, BMW, Toyota, Ford, & Porche combined)
4. Community
Facebook → It started in a Harvard dorm room when Myspace had a strong footing in the market.
Rather than competing with Myspace, Facebook focussed exclusively on Harvard students.
From here, they expanded to more campuses. And eventually, the world.
4 market wedges to dominate your competition:
1. Geographic - Uber started in SF. Now it's global
2. Community - Facebook started at Harvard. Now it has 3B.
3. Product - Amazon sold books. Now they sell everything.
4. Demographic - Tesla's first car was $100k. Now it's $40k.
