1️⃣ What is myositis?
'Myo' means muscle 💪 and 'itis' means inflammation 🔥
2️⃣ What causes it?
- infections 🦠
- drugs 💊
- autoimmunity 🗡️
It can affect children & adults.
Let's talk about autoimmune myositis or idiopathic inflammatory myopathy #IIM
3️⃣ What are the broad subtypes of IIM?
🔸Dermatomyositis
🔸Inclusion Body Myositis
🔸Polymyositis
🔸Necrotizing myositis
5️⃣ What are its muscular symptoms?
As the name suggests, weakness of the muscles is often the main symptom
🔸Inability to comb hair
🔸walk/squat/climb stairs
🔸turn in bed/ lift the neck
🔸at times difficulty in swallowing and even breathing (muscles of the food pipe and chest)
6️⃣Does it only affect muscles?
NO !!
Other symptoms
🔸Skin rashes
🔸Lung disease
🔸Bluish discoloration of fingers
🔸Cardiac disease
🔸Arthritis
7️⃣ How is it diagnosed?
With the help of a Rheumatologist/Internist/neurologist and supported by some blood tests, autoantibodies, imaging, electromyography and at times muscle biopsy ✂️
8️⃣ How is it treated?
To take care of the immune system gone awry, medicines that suppress/modulate the immune system are used.
