Found the reaction to the Brighton defeat - even for Twitter - somewhat bizarre.
Yes, Chelsea were really poor. Yes, Graham Potter got things wrong. Yes, a few players were not at their best.
But Chelsea were nine matches unbeaten prior to Saturday despite a number of issues.
There’s no Reece James at the minute. And no N’Golo Kante. They’re arguably the two true irreplaceables in this Chelsea squad.
Add injuries to Wesley Fofana and Kalidou Koulibaly and it’s clear Chelsea are stretched defensively at the moment. Patch jobs have been needed.
The relentless October schedule hasn’t helped matters; Potter and his staff have had little quality time to work on tactical ideals/principles.
It’s largely been: match prep, match, recovery, repeat.
And yet good results have been achieved and there have been positive signs.
There’s a bunch to improve upon, as Potter himself has stated - which is a good thing btw. But a little patience and understanding of the situation are required.
Do (some/many?) supporters have an appetite for that? Tricky as many been conditioned by Abramovich era.
Chaos and trophies. That’s what has been ingrained over almost two decades and it’s a hard mentality to change or move away from. I understand that.
Yet if Chelsea are to close the gap to Man City and compete again for the PL title, they need to commit to a project (imo).
Potter has showcased he can work to a long-term project. He’s a good bet by the ownership in that respect.
Still, there is risk and we’ll learn more about the commitment to the project - and Potter - as the season progresses.
But there will be a lot of noise along the way.
Would’ve written this, probably a little more thoughtfully, in a piece but am off until Dinamo.
Just appears as though many are not enjoying following Chelsea at the moment - and that’s a shame given just a few months the club’s very future felt under threat.
