U.S. anti-abortion politicians have stripped abortion access for about 1 in 3 people of reproductive age since Roe v. Wade was overturned.
Abortion is now on ballot in 5 states for the #2022Midterms. Here's a rundown of the proposals 🧡
MONTANA:
LR-131 would punish medics with up to 20 years in prison for not saving infants "born alive" after attempted abortion.
Impact: Montana already criminalizes not treating viable, premature infants. LR-131 expands that to those with no or very low chances of survival.
Montana’s "born alive" act could force doctors to resuscitate infants with no chance of survival, @Guttmacher's @ElizNash told AJ+.
Infants might be subject to traumatic measures like chest compressions and IVs, not for survival, but simply to "fulfill the needs of the law."
Montana's "born alive" act would apply to parents who undergo induced early labor for nonviable infants.
Critics say it would force medics to deny compassionate care to infants with no chance of survival.
Fewer than 1% of abortions occur after a fetus is viable outside the womb (about 22 weeks).
Montana already criminalizes not treating viable infants "born alive" after an attempted abortion. The new law is simply a mechanism to "paint abortion as a dangerous process," says Nash.
KENTUCKY:
Amendment 2 would explicitly ban abortion as a right in the state constitution.
Impact: If approved, it would become "impossible, essentially, to roll back the abortion ban that's in effect now," says @ElizNash.
Abortion is already almost fully banned in Kentucky, with no exception for rape/incest.
Because abortion is inaccessible, people must travel up to 245 miles to other states, where they often face requirements like mandatory counseling or 24-hour wait periods.
3 states have ballot proposals that would enshrine abortion as a constitutional right:
CALIFORNIA: Prop 1
MICHIGAN: Prop 3
VERMONT: Prop 5
Impact: If approved, it would be difficult for those states to pass future abortion bans or restrictions like counseling or wait periods.
The #2022Midterms are the biggest test for abortion rights at the ballot box in a "very long time," says Nash.
They come at a critical time. Since Roe v. Wade was overturned, abortion has been totally banned or made unavailable in at least 13 states.

Anti-abortion protesters are buying up property around clinics, making it easier to harass and intimidate patients.
And because of weak laws, clinic volunteers are pretty much out there fending for themselves:
