Thread on Salatul Witr
I begin with the Name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
Witr (the odd) prayer is one of the confirmed Sunnahs (practice) of the Prophet SAW. It is performed after Salatul ‘isha (the night prayer) and it is in odd number.
The Prophet SAW never abandoned the Witr prayer even while traveling. This explains how consistent he (SAW) was in observing it and how virtuous it is.
In Sahih Muslim a narration on the strength of Abu Saeed (RA) states that the Prophet SAW said:“Perform Witr before morning comes.”
Witr prayer can be observed in the following manners;
1. 3 Raka’at (2 unit with Tasleem and then 1 Raka’ah with Tasleem).
2. 11 Raka’at (He will pray them in 2 units doing Tasleem after each and then the 11th Raka’ah alone).
3. 3 Raka’at consecutively with just one sitting.

The third type (3 Raka’at with just one sitting) was the least he practiced. The commonest and most often type is that of 2 units with Tasleem and 1 Raka’ah.
Performing it like Salatul Maghrib is disliked in fact some hadith stated it’s prohibition.

The best and most virtuous according to the scholars is to do it in 2 units and one Raka’ah whether it’s 3 or 5 or 7 or 9 or 11.
May Allah grant us the strength and ability to always observe Salatul Witr.
Shaykh Bin Baz (HR) was asked about the difference between Taraweeh, Qiyam & Tahajjud and he answered, “Night prayer is called Tahajjud and also Qiyamul layl (they are the same) however Taraweeh differs because it is offered at the first part of the night during Ramadan & shorter
All of them are Witr.
