Who was the Mu'tazilite al-Rabi' bin Subayh (160 AH)?
Al-Rabi' taught Sufyan al-Thawri, Wakee', Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi, and others.
Shu'ba said that he is from the masters of the Muslims. Al-Dhahabi said that he was from the ascetic worshippers. He died of sickness during jihad.
Despite being seen as a Mu'tazilite, the scholars of Ahlulsunnah took from him and benefited from his knowledge.
Also, this didn't prevent them from praising his positive qualities, while being balanced about his weakness in hadith.
The classical scholars of Ahlulsunnah taught us to be fair with people of innovation at all times.
You can find the reports of al-Rabi' in Sunan al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah.
