Are you trying to switch to a new career? Here are 7 steps I think you will find useful.
1. Evaluate your strengths
2. Decide on a path
3. Draw up a roadmap
4. Take relevant courses
5. Work on projects
6. Revamp resume
7. Find a mentor & join a community
Details 👇🏽
It is very common to see people changing careers different from what they studied or their initial careers. I did this in 2020 after spending 4 years as an Engineer in the Oil & Gas industry. It was one of the best decisions I made. Now let’s dive into the details:
Evaluating your strengths
To excel in any field, you should play to your strengths.
✨ If you’re good at convincing people to part with their money, try sales or marketing
✨ If you are love numbers, try data
✨ If you’ve an eye for layouts, patterns & colors, try design.
Deciding on a path
Now that you have evaluated your strengths, you might find that you can wear many hats. It happened to me 😊.
To stay focused on your journey, you need to decide on ONE path and stick to it. I’ll draw up a framework for this in a future post.
Creating a roadmap
The next question is “how am I going to achieve my goal?” Easy, A Roadmap.
You could use readily available ones online or curate one that works based on your timeline and jobs you’re after. More on this later.
Taking relevant courses
One trend I’ve seen is people posting stuff like “Take these courses for FREE” without evaluating the content or taken the courses themselves.
The world is in an “information overload” state. Before you start any course, please do your research 🙏🏾
Working on projects
You need to do this to show potential employers you have the skills. Courses and certifications don’t cut it.
Think of your own projects & work on them not just course assignments.
You can then make a portfolio with any of these free sites 👇🏽
Revamping your resume
✨ Resumes for career switchers can be tricky but the goal is to tailor your past experiences towards the new career
✨ Have link to your portfolio on your resume
✨ Showcase your projects close to the top
✨ Highlight skills relevant to your new career
Finding a mentor or community
✨ Mentors can be active or passive. ✨ For passive mentors, you leverage on the guidance they provide online while active mentors are those that you check in with regularly.
✨ Lastly, join communities help you find folks on similar paths
Hope this was useful to you 😊. If it wasn’t, thanks for reading anyways.
Wishing you success on your career transition journey. If you have successfully switched careers, please share your success story briefly for others to learn from
