One of the misconceptions of the Khawārij of today is that anyone from the Imāmī Rāfidhah is judged as a kāfir, and on the basis of this belief, they make takfīr on the mujāhidīn for “defending shirk and it’s people.” Destroying this belief is key to destroying their methodology.
So how did the fuqahā’ deal with heretical sects like the Rawāfidh?
In al-Farq bayn al-Firāq by Abū Mansūr al-Baghdādī, the Imāmī Rāfidhah judged as a sect of ilzāmī kufr. Their laymen aren’t takfīred unless they manifest kufr, but are excluded from the ummah in certain rulings.
Not everyone who ascribes to a heterodox sect is a kāfir. We as Ahlus-Sunnah don’t believe that the one who makes a statement implying kufr becomes a kāfir unless he manifests the kufr of that implication. This is explained in Bidāyatu’l-Mujtahid by ibn Rushd. 👇
Shaykhu’l-Islām ibn Taymiyyah in Minhaj as-Sunnah prohibited unjust violence against the Rāfidhah under Islāmic rule and called for treating them with fairness and justice, saying that the treatment of Ahlus-Sunnah towards them would be better than how they treated themselves.
From the Hanābilah, ibn an-Najjār considered the mujtahid dā`iyyah of the Rawāfidh and other heretical sects like the Mu`tazilah a kāfir, while only labelling the muqallid a fāsiq. 👇
From Najdī Da`wah, Shaykh Sulaymān ibn `Abdullāh said the same thing as ibn an-Najjār regarding the mujtahid dā`iyyah and muqallid of these sects of ilzāmī kufr. 👇
Shaykh Abā Butayn also repeated the same thing. 👇
The Imāmī Rawāfidh are also a sect that doesn’t reject the essence and explicit meaning of the Shahādah, meaning that they don’t explicitly declare other than Allāh an ilāh or something worthy of worship, and don’t reject the Messenger ﷺ as the Final Messenger of Allāh.
Hence, they are different from the Nusayriyyah, Druze and other than them who nullify asl ash-Shahādah and explicitly ascribe divinity to other than Allāh and have no known group of people from them who don’t hold kufrī beliefs.
The clear difference between the Rāfidhah and groups like the Nusayriyyah thus can’t put them in the same category. It’s then absurd to mass takfīr them on the basis that we we do it to the Nusayriyyah or a kāfir aslī religion, where mere ascription to it is kufr, even jokingly.
