I'm two months into #LongCovid and the way this disease has completely paused my life. I can't believe we're being told the pandemic is over.
Anyway, here are the main things I'm noticing that I did not know before getting it:
- Regular doctors and specialists have no ideas what to do. They are mostly unhelpful. You really need to find a doctor specializing in COVID right now.
- On that note, it's almost impossible to find COVID specialist doctors. And they all have wait lists.
You can go to a cardiologist and be like "my heart is beating too fast" and he will say "huh, sucks" and if you pass all the tests, he will say LATER DAYS
You can go to a pulmonologist with shortness of breath and once you pass the tests, they will say "sounds like long COVID and I don't know much about long COVID" and then say SEE YA WOULDN'T WANNA BE YA
You can get blood work done and they'll be like "huh your xyz is low. Maybe you should see a blood doctor" and then you can start the whole game again! It's like bingo, you can stamp every specialist and still have zero treatment
anyway this week the best recommendation I got was to put frog venom in my blood, which is still more than my doctors gave me so maybe I should get some frog juice
It's ableist and stupid that I have to say this, but I have no preexisting conditions. Literally zero. I am never on any meds. I work out five days a week. I've never had bronchitis or any other illness, not even minor. I have all the shots. there's no reason for me to have this.
To give an idea of then vs now.
Then: Hiking 10 miles through the hills, happy as can be
Now: Wondering if I can tolerate walking the dog around the block. Many times I can't.
Then: Burpees, planks, situps for an hour.
Now: dishes are hard.
Endemic means we can co exist with the virus. We can catch it many times in our lives. This isn't endemic. We should still be acting like we do not want this virus. Masks friends! MASKS
Someone wants to see if maybe I have bad genetics and that is why I have long covid. In short: No. I have actually had genetic testing for other reasons. I have amazing genes. My entire family on both sides are super long lived. No predispositions to any of this.
We have to stop looking at the patient and keep our eyes on the disease. It's comforting to look at people and say "see it couldn't happen to me because xyz" but this disease is not like that.
The reason I say this is that I honestly felt that I could not get #longcovid. I had no risk factors. We're just so woefully uninformed.
Here's a great thread on someone's difficult journey with what worked for them, which is always helpful to read
Thank you so much those sending helpful resources. Im gonna peruse them and link them into this thread. šŸ–¤šŸ–¤ Muting bc my notifications are a mess. To those asking who diagnosed me: your mom diagnosed me last night, I’m your step parent now
