@bharadvajatmaja It’s not sahagamana (which means to “go with”, indicating the widow’s joining her husband in death) but a kind of Ātmahatya in certain difficult circumstances.
@bharadvajatmaja There really is no contradiction. The Smṛtikāras who proscribed sahagamana for “brāhmaṇis” disapproved of Ātmahatya as something forbidden by the Śruti.
@bharadvajatmaja It is likely that they may have disapproved of Kalanos or Zarmanochegas, whose practices are not indicative of what is scripturally approved.
@bharadvajatmaja The Sattra quotation appears to be a little misconceived as it is clearly using a symbolic correspondence between different aspects of the sacrifice & different constituents of the Sattrin’s body.
