How to live an intentional life:
First, you may be asking: what does it mean to live an intentional life?
For me, it means actively (and daily) making conscious choices that align with and get me closer to, the things I value.
It's camping with my son over a game with the boys.
It's saying no to a client because it’s out of scope.
It’s buying the high mileage car so you can give more money away.
Each of these might not mean much to you, but I choose them because they align with what my family (and I) value.
Here is my 5-step process for living a more intentional life:
• Identify your values
Values are always the foundation.
We set individual and family values.
1. Buy some cards or print off a sheet you find online
2. Do the exercise independently (pick 3-5 personal & family values)
3. Review and revise
Our family values are below.
• Unveil your vision
Ask yourself: in 10/20 years, what will a successful life look like?
Answer these personally, professionally, and physically:
â–¸ What challenges need to be overcome?
â–¸ What opportunities need to be captured?
â–¸ What strengths need to be leveraged?
It’s often hard to envision what this will be, but don’t let that stop you. These are way out there, make it something you couldn’t even imagine.
â–¸ What will you feel?
â–¸ Who will be with you?
â–¸ What will the impact be?
â–¸ Does it feel insane? (the answer should be yes)
• Set your goals
Values → Vision → Goals
Start with 3-5 3-year goals in these life domains:
â–¸ Family
â–¸ Spiritual
â–¸ Work
â–¸ Financial
â–¸ Community
â–¸ Health
â–¸ Personal
Then cut to 1-2 per domain, making sure you keep one in each category.
• Create the roadmap
Most create the goals then stop there. WRONG.
Write down 3-5 steps on how you’ll achieve the goal and set a deadline for completing it.
The first step should always be the next action and should be small enough to be completed immediately.
• Work the plan
You’ve done the hard work. Now it’s time to act.
Your goals should now be broken down into:
â–¸ Quarterly
â–¸ Weekly
â–¸ Daily
â–¸ Quarterly
You can achieve a lot in 90 days. But you should limit yourself to 3-5 goals per quarter.
That means every goal won’t get worked on every quarter and that’s okay.
Review your progress over the last 90 days and set your plan for the next 90.
â–¸ Weekly
Make progress every week on your goals (outside a vacation). This momentum is invaluable.
Ask: what do I need to do in the next week to stay on track to reach my 90-day goal?
â–¸ Daily
Every day, go through the productivity process:
Review → Reflect → Plan → Execute
» Review & reflect on the prior day
» Plan the current day
» Execute immediately
Every day we have a choice: to live today with intention or to not.
I'm doing my best to choose intention.
Are you?
