I will mention the three main types it comes in and what their rulings are.
First of all this is separate issue to making Dua directly to the Prophet for him to fulfil your request, this is commonly known as Istighatha and is clear shirk.
In this attached thread you can see what scholars have said regarding this and the different forms it comes in.

Type 1
Requesting dua from the Prophet after his death, with the belief that it must go through an intermediary between the Prophet and Allah, and that you can’t ask Allah directly without going through an intermediary or it won’t be correct.
This is Shirk Al-Akbar

Type 2
That you ask the Prophet away from the grave at a a distance that only Allah can hear, as it is only Allah who can hear from anywhere and doesn’t mix between the different voices that call upon him.

The type 2 is commonly practiced where millions of people from far corners of the world, many at the same time are calling upon the prophet expecting he can hear them all and respond to their requests.
This is Shirk Al-Akbar.

Type 3
This is when the Dua is requested from the Prophet at and next to the grave, and this does not contain the belief of type 1. This is a Bidah and it is one of the pathways to Shirk.

Since shirk is when it’s possible for the name of the object of worship to be switched with the name of Allah
for example the statement “Oh Prophet make Dua to Allah for me”it isn’t possible to say “Oh Allah ask Allah to make dua for me”
for example the statement “Oh Prophet make Dua to Allah for me”it isn’t possible to say “Oh Allah ask Allah to make dua for me”
this is because shirk is defined as
صرف حق الله لغيره
صرف حق الله لغيره
In summary
Asking the Prophet to make Dua for you to Allah after his death can be bidah or shirk never permissible.
But the reality is that the way it is practised commonly today falls into the types of Shirk.

But the reality is that the way it is practised commonly today falls into the types of Shirk.
And regardless of it being bidah or shirk it is a filthy practice that is not from Islam and those who promote it are promoting at the very least a major bidah.
