Ok folks here we go, ask and you shall receive
Below is a thread on how to field dress a deer
In this thread, there will be photos of the inside of a dead white tail deer.
If you don’t want to see it, don’t read the rest of this 🧵
You’ve shot a deer, now what do U do?
After you know the animal is down, wait a few minutes for the animal to pass. If the deer didn’t run too far, chances are it’s a good shot and 15 mins should do the trick.
Next, locate the animal, tag it, and thank it for its life
DO NOT do anything until it’s tagged
After the animal is tagged, find the entry/exit wound and assess the situation. If you had a clean shot in the vitals, you’re good and can take your time
If you shot it far back in the “guts” (stomach/GI tract), hurry up and get the bile away from the meat. Don’t waste time.
Turn the deer on its back & get to work.
I like to use a “Butt out” tool like the one pictured.
Insert the tool, turn 3x’s (you’ll feel it grab) and pull out the colon. Cut the colon about 12” or higher from the tool, and zip tie or wax string creating a closed colon.
Once the colon is out, make a small incision near the groin. Be sure to get through all the layers
DON’T knick the stomach! It will smell like shit and taint the meat. Take your time and get through each layer of hide/muscle/membrane
In this pic there’s 1 more layer to get thru
After you get through all the layers, carefully cut up to the sternum and expose the GI tract.
Also, cut downward to the anus and be sure to “open up” the groin as much as you can. You will cut into a little bit of muscle at this point.
Once you can see all the “guts” give them a look over to check for any disease.
Foul odor, and/or white spots on the vitals can be signs of diseases like Tuberculosis.
Check for anything nasty like the picture.
This is something I DO. You don’t have to, but it works well imo.
Buy a bone saw like the one pictured. Cut open the chest cavity up the sternum. (Not if you’re going to mount the deer)
This exposes the vitals and allows easier access to the trachea which you need to cut
Remember you cut the colon first, now cut the diaphragm which separates the heart/lungs from the rest of the organs
Also, around the GI tract (holding it to the spine area) is a thin membrane that holds the guts to the cavity. Cut that and the trachea, and it’s ready to pull out
Pull out the guts and empty the cavity
Save the heart.
It’s tasty and you should try it at least once
Gut pile and heart should look like this
Rinse out the cavity and let it drain for a few mins. Now you’re ready to bring it home and process it!
Congrats on your harvest!
