The United States National Interest Waiver (NIW) path to PR for international students in United States:
Normally you will need an employment or marriage to be able to apply for a green card in United States. However, you can petition the U.S government to waive the requirement of a job offer on the ground that you have an advanced degree/training or exceptional abilities and
a well defined plan for the future that would be of significant benefit to the United States.
You will be required to show alot of evidence to demonstrate this.
This can be very daunting, but with a good plan and the right supporting documents, you can pull this off. Here are a few tips that will help you put in a strong NIW application:
1. Ensure you get into a quality learning environment. This will eliminate any potential bias from government officials and doubts on the quality of the training you've received. Target R1 and R2 universities because they are considered as high research universities in the USA.
2. Target studies & research that have potential benefits to US & can be argued to be in the National Interest of the USA. This is key because your ability to execute your proposed future plan for the NIW will be judged based on your current work & achievements.
You should be able to fit your work & future plan into at least one of these areas. The areas of National Interest to the USA may be broadly categorized into five:
A) National Security
B) Public Health
C) Environment
D) Public Welfare
E) U.S Economy
3. Ensure your time in grad school is well invested in activities that will make your application stand out like having published article, awards, recognitions, comoetitions and engaing in extracurricular activities that further demonstrates you are an asset to the United States.
Please note that there is no specific requirement to have published articles to qualify for a NIW petition. However, having published articles, could make a NIW petition stronger.
