The khawārij rebelled against the best of people after the prophets and messengers under the slogan "There is no rule except for Allah” and pretence of enjoining good and forbidding vice. Don’t be surprised by their actions against those less than them.
Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman رضي الله عنه narrated as in Sahih Muslim that the Prophet ﷺ said, there will be rulers after him who will not follow his guidance nor sunnah, some of them will have the hearts of devils in the bodies of human beings.
Hudhayfah asked what should he do if he lives to see these worrying incidents. The Prophet ﷺ commanded him to listen and obey the ruler, even if he flogs his back and takes his wealth. وهي وصية لنا جميعاً
