Hi, Olumuyiwa, hope this message finds you well.
Thank you for your feedback, conscientious research, and interest in Northeastern University.
The reason why some (not all) of the 9 colleges at NU require Nigerian citizens and residents to take English
proficiency exams, is that, despite Nigerian educational system use of English as the language of instruction, actual proficiency in the language varies greatly among Nigerian applicants. We know this from our analysis of historical test data (e.g. some applicants score
high on the IELTS, some donβt, some donβt even meet minimum standards for admissions consideration). In addition, some programs at NU are English intensive, some are less. That is, proficiency in the language is crucial in some programs relative to others.
With all that said, we have a waiver request form that applicants with work experience in an approved list of countries (including Canada) can submit. If their work experience is extensive enough, weβre happy to waive the requirement.
If youβre interested in this, please let us know. Last, please note that we are intentional with our policies, and it may be useful to add that we are coincidentally revisiting our policies regarding our many Nigerian applicants.
Sincerely,
Sincerely,
